Why The World Doesn’t Owe It To You To Listen To Your Music

Image
As much as you might want them to, loads of new listeners are probably not going to spontaneously flock to your next release and listen to it, especially if you’re a developing artist. Sometimes we get so caught up in the excitement of sharing new music that we forget that connecting with audiences is far from a predictable, sure thing. Music is not an “if you build it, they will come,” endeavor because when it comes to making and sharing music, the reality is that no one owes you anything whether it’s coming to your shows or streaming your songs. Making music and getting people to listen are two different skill-sets Building a real connection with listeners takes a lot of thankless work, and if no one has bothered to check out your latest album or single, the chances are high that you haven’t been putting in enough promotional effort. The best and most honest starting point for developing artists to promote their work is a tricky one these days. It’s acknowledging not only that ...

5 Tips For A Fruitful Collaboration

Image
Some of the best music in the world has come from collaboration, but creating with partners doesn’t come naturally to some songwriters. Every collaboration is a relationship, whether you’re writing with a partner or performing music as a six-piece band. When these relationships are built on trust, communication, and respect, creativity is allowed to thrive. For collaborative partnerships to be fruitful, it’s important that everyone involved feels comfortable sharing their thoughts, ideas, and concerns. When everyone involved in your collaboration commits to speaking freely and listening, your best ideas are able to develop naturally and clearly, with everyone’s input being considered. Your collaborations can’t reach their full creative potential witho...

5 Different Ways You Can Outline Your Song

Image
I believe that one of the best ways to start off  a new song  — especially when I’m experiencing some  writer’s block  — is  to outline my song . I started doing this after witnessing a co-writer of mine naturally starting off writing like this once in a session since then I’ve started incorporating it regularly when I write on my own. I find that outlining is such  a great way to make sure my song progresses throughout the verses and hits satisfyingly at the chorus.  The message of  the lyrics  becomes clear, I can imagine how I might want the chords to change and fit the sections and the overall arc of the song is easier to write. While I don’t have to outline the entire song, per se, especially if I’m freewriting, it is extremely helpful when I’m in a time crunch or I have an idea that isn’t executing properly. Here are my suggestions on how to outline a song before you get into the throes of writing it. 1. A Traditional Storyline T...

How Music-Makers Can Leverage Rejection And Disappointment

Image
Rejection and disappointment are inevitable for those who seriously pursue music, so why not put these experiences to work and get some good out of them? You can think of life as a song recording. We can try and fail, to ignore or edit out unwanted noise and mistakes, or we can seamlessly weave them into the production and let them add character and nuance to the music. Setbacks and pain are going to meet you at many points in your musical pursuits, and a lot of what you’ll experience will be out of your control. However, the way you respond to challenges is something that’s completely in your hands. Why music-makers are uniquely suited to experience rejection and disappointment Doing anything creative leaves you at risk of being disappointed, but there’s an especially high amount of pain and rejection in the music industry. Music has always been a brutal industry to find success in, but it’s never been as competitive as it is right now. Add in the fact that streaming revenues ty...
