2 unrestrained children found in back seat at suspected DUI crash scene; driver arrested

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A woman faces numerous misdemeanor charges after her arrest at a crash scene early Monday morning in a Memphis neighborhood.

Khadijah Houston, 32, is charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, child abuse/neglect/endangerment, failure to exercise due care, and violation of child restraint law.

Shelby County court records indicate she has a history of traffic violations but no prior arrests.

According to the arrest affidavit, Memphis police responded to a DUI call from Sunset Lake Cove in a neighborhood off of Covington Pike shortly after midnight on Monday.

The caller told officers that a driver, later identified as Houston, had crashed a Nissan Maxima in the cove and admitted she was drunk. Police reportedly found two children under the age of four in the back seat who were not in car seats and not wearing seat belts.

The affidavit did not make note of any injuries. The children in the car were referred to DCS.

Houston told police she crashed after believing someone was following her.

Police say Houston was unable to provide proof of insurance at the scene. She allegedly admitted to officers that she had consumed multiple alcoholic beverages before the incident.

Houston remains at the Shelby County Jail on a $2,500 bond and is due in court Tuesday morning.
